CDs recommended include O Magnum Misterium sung by Polyphony, in the Secretary’s opinion one of the most evocative and haunting Christmas discs of recent years, which has just been reissued at bargain price on the Hyperion Helios label. He would also recommend A Meditation on Christ’s Nativity sung by St John’s College, Cambridge on Belart, if it were available, which it appears not to be, so he won’t. On Christmas Day 2cds for the price of 1 includes most [but not two, oddly] of the King’s commissions for the Nine Lessons and Carols and their televised Christmas services [Sir Richard Rodney Bennett and John Rutter having been commissioned twice] a wide range of styles in stunning performances. The Treasurer recommends one of the latest discs in Hyperion’s Romantic Piano Concertos, yet another superlative performance from Mark-Andre Hamelin.
